Another one for the “Oh, they’re from Australia too?” list: Maia Toakley joins the growing lineup of artists I’ve featured here lately who call Australia home. Coincidence? Maybe. Great music? Absolutely.
I only discovered her recently. Pessimist Babe popped up, and something about it made me immediately stop what I was doing and look up who I was listening to. Since then, I’ve basically had her on repeat. She released her EP BEFORE I LET GO back in February this year, and it’s a collection of five perfect songs worth playing from start to finish. The last track, Half of Them, is my instant favorite. You can watch Maia perform the song (and two more from the EP) in the video below. It’s a must-watch. If you’re into Julia Jacklin, Angie McMahon, or Lucy Dacus, you’ll probably find yourself right at home with Toakley’s songs.
By the way, she also runs a podcast called How Do You Muse?, where she sits down with musicians and creatives to talk about what it’s really like to make art in today’s world.
