Stop What You're Doing and Listen to Flores
How Flores weaves memory, music, and resistance into one
Emerging after a three-year break, Flores released her new single, “Red Dirt,” this past week. The Mexican-American artist draws from R&B and neo-soul but shapes them into something entirely her own. Her debut EP, The Lives They Left (2022), is an homage to her family and Indigenous and Mexican heritage. Her identity runs through every song: being the daughter of immigrants, growing up on the border in El Paso, and her ongoing commitment to activism. In the current political climate where these narratives are still under threat, her music doesn't just resonate—it confronts, challenges, and insists on being heard. “Red Dirt” shows us that identity, place, and resistance are all part of the same story.
